I said Maria-José was dangerous, but i didn’t thought she would be that dangerous. The lefty found her way to the title, and won fair and square the finale match against a Jelena Jankovic who also had an incredible run this week.
After preventing an all Serbians finale by beating rather easily Ana Ivanovic, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez used her various weapons to end Jelena’s dream of winning a third title in 4 years in Rome and hold her most precious title to date.
Jelena had an impressive tournament this week, giving a tennis lesson to Venus, and able to run away with the win in semi after an epic battle with the younger sister, Serena Williams but Maria’s drop shots and consistency had the end of her.
Martinez was leading 5-2 when Jankovic started to climb back to even take the lead in the first set, but in a tight tie break, it wasn’t enough to cool down the Spaniard who finally buckled up the first set 76. The second was a little of the same story, Jankovic not able to capitaze in the important moment 75, give all credit her impressive opponent.
funny fact: if you look at the stats on the WTA tour, Maria-José is 1,76m and Jelena is 1,76m. O_o. I think they forget to update Maria's file. hihi
Pennetta might be struggling a little (a lot) in single, but she found a partner with whom it is good to win in double: Gisela Dulko. It is their third title in a row.
