The fed cup was held this weekend, and some countries were playing for a lot. It was the semi-final in the world group. If Italia, defending Champ, lead by Pennetta didn’t have any problem to pass 5-0 Czech Republic, USA caused a huge surprise by throwing out Russia. Of course, Elena Dementieva was the only solid player to compete for her country, and she did one hell of a job winning her 2 singles matches, but at the end, it wasn’t enough, 3-2 USA.
On the world group play off, Belgium, despite a severe injury to Kim Clijters, the defeat of Justine Henin that came to the rescue, Wickmayer did good by winning her 2 singles matches. Before the end of the weekend, it was already 3-1 for the Belgian gals against Estonia.
Ukraine, deprived of one of the Bondarenko’s sister, was no match for the strong team of Australia. Samantha Stosus is a big order for any that stand in her way these days. 5-0.
The French team won against Germany in a decisive double match. Serbia, despite the surprise win for Bojana Jovanovski over Magadalena Rybarikova was thrown out of the world group 2-3 to the great despair of Jelena Jankovic who felt utterly responsible after losing a very close match against Hantuchova. Slovak move on 3-2.
